Millions of Hindu Bengalis will be affected after publication of NRC : claims ANM

The final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be published on July 31 next in Assam. After publication of final NRC, lakhs of Hindu Bengalis will be affected in the state, especially those who took shelter in India at the time of partition to safeguard their religion. This has been claimed by Bijoy Chakrabarty, General Secretary of “Assam Nagrik Mancha”(ANM) in Hojai through a press communique.

As per the press release, NRC State Co-ordinator Prateek Hajela’s sudden visit to Hojai district on June 28 last has created suspicion over the whole issue. The press release stated that, after holding two hours of long confidential meeting with the NRC officials of Hojai district at Rabindranath Tagore University in Hojai, Hajela took stock of NRC activities in the district where media persons were not even allowed to cover the story.

It is heard that four documents namely, Refugee certificates, Citizenship certificates, Migration certificates and Birth certificates issued by the authority from outside Assam will not be accepted by NRC authority as per State Co-ordinator’s order which will be a great threat for the Bengali applicants. Nothing is lying confidential now–ANM’s press release added.

According to ANM sources, Hajela gave many verbal directions to the NRC officials strictly. As a result of that, possibly more than 20 lakhs names of Bengalis from the entire state will be scrapped out from the final NRC and around 90 percent of which will be come out from Hindu Bengali community. That will be a matter of serious concern- ANM added.

Notably total more than 41 lakhs names have been scrapped from the final draft list and draft exclusion list of NRC on 30th July of 2018 and 26th June of 2019 respectively.

Through this press release,ANM tries to attract the attention of Supreme Court, Central Government, State Government, State Co-ordinator Hajela and the organizations who have filed various petitions in Supreme court in relation to NRC updation in Assam, only to give safeguard to Hindu Bengalis who are going to be the victims of partition.
