A total of 100 schools in the Guwahati city will be tobacco-free by 2020. The District Tobacco Control Cell of Kamrup Metro has set the deadline to implement three long term strategies to enforce sections 4 and 6 of the COTPA act in the city.
In a recent sudden visit to 40 educational institutions in the city by the District Tobacco Control Cell of Kamrup Metro found only 20 to be Tobacco free.
After the visit, the cell has planned to implement three long term strategies to enforce sections 4 and 6 of the COTPA act in the institutions.
To carry out the process district administration has decided to constitute a task force for each circle of the district. The task force will comprise a magistrate, a food safety official, a police official along with officials of the muncipality.
According to sources, the main job of the force is to declare 100 schools of the district tobacco free within this financial year. The district administration has asked the inspector of schools to issue an order to all schools to implement Section 6 of the COTPA act.
As per the act, every educational institution should constitute a monitoring committee to keep their campus tobacco free.
